WWF Royal Rumble came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Flying Edge. It was one of the few wrestling games on the system that tried to capture the spectacle of the pay-per-view event, arriving at a time when sports games were starting to feel a little more ambitious, even if the graphics were still pretty blocky.
You pick a wrestler from the WWF roster and step into the ring with one goal: throw every other competitor over the top rope. The main mechanics involve grappling, striking, and building up a special meter to unleash signature moves like Bret Hart's Sharpshooter. Up to four wrestlers can be on screen during the actual Royal Rumble match, which gets frantic as bodies fly and new entrants keep pouring in. The pacing is fast and a little stiff, with the AI putting up a decent fight on higher difficulties. It feels like a messy, unpredictable brawl where one wrong move can send you tumbling out of the match for good.
