Xatax came out in 1994 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Pixel Painters Corporation. It was one of those puzzle games you'd find tucked away on a shareware disk or a budget compilation, a product of its time when simple, addictive concepts ruled on the platform.
You control a cursor to swap adjacent colored blocks on a grid, aiming to create matches of three or more to clear them from the screen. The main objective is to survive as long as possible against a rising tide of new blocks that push upward from the bottom. Key mechanics include planning several moves ahead to set up chain reactions and managing the limited space before the grid fills. The pacing starts deceptively calm but quickly becomes frantic, demanding quick decisions under pressure. It feels like a constant race against the inevitable crush.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
