Game Overview

Xtrek is one of those MS-DOS Classic Games releases from the early 1990s, a game that came out of the University of California, Berkeley, and was later distributed by various shareware channels. It belongs to that era of PC gaming where complex simulations and text-based interfaces were common, a time when players expected to spend a lot of time with manuals and reference sheets just to get started.

You control a Federation starship, issuing text commands to navigate sectors, manage energy between shields and weapons, and engage enemy ships like Klingons and Romulans in tactical combat. The main objective is to survive hostile territory, complete missions, and sometimes just make it back to a starbase for repairs. Signature mechanics include strategic resource management, where you constantly balance power allocation, and a command line interface that requires precise syntax for every action. The pacing is deliberate and the difficulty is high, demanding careful planning and quick decisions during combat. It feels like being a lone captain in a vast, unforgiving universe where every jump could be your last.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
