Game Overview

I first played Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished on MS-DOS back in the late 80s, when it was released by Nihon Falcom. It was one of those games that felt different from the start, with its bright colors and fast-paced action standing out among the more methodical RPGs of the era. The story was simple but effective: you play as Adol Christin, a young adventurer drawn to the mysterious land of Esteria to uncover the truth behind its decline.

You control Adol from an overhead perspective, moving screen by screen through fields, towns, and multi-level dungeons. Combat is entirely contact-based; you damage enemies by bumping into them at an angle, but misjudge the approach and you take damage instead. Your main goal is to gather the six Books of Ys to access the final dungeon and confront the root of the evil. The pacing is brisk, though the difficulty can spike in certain areas, requiring some level grinding to survive deeper zones. It feels immediate and physical, like you're in a constant dance of collision and evasion.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
