I picked up Ys III on the Sega Genesis back in 1991, developed by Falcom and published by Renovation in the West. It arrived during a time when the console was packed with platformers and action RPGs, and this one stood out for shifting the series from its top-down roots into a side-scrolling adventure. It felt like a deliberate, if risky, move for the franchise.
You control Adol Christin through a series of villages, fields, and multi-level dungeons, clearing screens of enemies with a quick sword slash or a useful jump attack. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery behind a sudden demonic outbreak in the land of Felghana. The game emphasizes real-time combat, platform navigation, and collecting items to upgrade your gear, all while managing a limited inventory. The pacing is brisk, and some later sections demand precise timing, especially during boss fights. It feels responsive and immediate, even when the difficulty spikes catch you off guard.
