You finally get to swing your sword properly in this one—jumping gaps, slashing enemies midair, and burning through potions while Dogi cracks walls open. The side-scrolling combat feels way better than those old bump fights.
Ys III shakes things up from the first two games—instead of that weird bump combat system, you finally get to swing your sword like a normal person. Side-scrolling instead of top-down, jumping over gaps, slashing enemies in midair… it feels way more action-packed. Adol tags along with Dogi to investigate some creepy stuff happening in his hometown, and of course, things escalate quickly.
Magic rings add some fun twists—one heals you slowly, another boosts your defense—but you’ll still burn through potions like crazy. The puzzles are simple (find a key, push a block), but the dungeons have this satisfying old-school flow. Just don’t expect the story to blow your mind—it’s classic Ys: vague prophecies, ancient evils, and Adol being Adol.
It’s janky in that early SNES way, but the music slaps and the combat’s oddly satisfying once you get the timing down. Definitely the black sheep of the series, but worth playing if you like action-RPGs with personality.
