Game Overview
Ys Strategy on the DS is one of those games that sneaks up on you—what starts as a simple grid-based tactics game quickly turns into a surprisingly deep little war sim. You’ve got your usual unit types (archers, knights, etc.), but positioning them just right around terrain and fortresses actually matters, which I didn’t expect from a handheld title. The first few battles trick you into thinking it’s straightforward, then suddenly you’re juggling reinforcements, morale, and even weather effects.
It’s got that classic Ys aesthetic—bright colors, chunky sprites—but don’t let the look fool you. Some of the later maps will have you resetting turns just to squeeze out a narrow win. If you’ve ever lost an hour to Fire Emblem or Advance Wars on the bus, this one’s worth digging up.
