I picked up Ys Strategy on the Nintendo DS back in 2006, a time when the handheld was full of experimental titles trying to make use of the dual screens. Developed by Tom Create, it was a turn based strategy spin-off from the long running Ys action RPG series, and it felt like a natural, if somewhat niche, fit for the platform. It wasn't trying to be the next big thing; it was just a solid tactical game you could carry in your pocket.

You command a small squad of units, like knights and archers, across grid based maps, moving them into position and engaging enemy forces in combat. The main goal is to complete scenario objectives, which usually involve defeating all enemies or seizing a stronghold. Two mechanics that stand out are the terrain and weather effects, which directly impact movement and attack ranges, and the ability to call in reinforcements mid battle, adding a layer of desperation to tough fights. The pacing is deliberate, and some missions are surprisingly difficult, demanding careful planning with every turn. It feels like a tense, thoughtful puzzle where one wrong move can cost you the entire battle.
