I picked up Ys Strategy for the Nintendo DS back in 2006, a time when the handheld was full of experimental titles trying to use both screens in clever ways. It was developed by Tom Create, and honestly, it felt like a pretty niche release even then, a turn based strategy spin-off of a series known for its fast action RPGs. It was one of those games you'd find buried in a bargain bin, a curious oddity for fans of either the Ys universe or tactical games in general.

You control Adol and a handful of other characters, each leading their own small squad of units across grid based battlefields viewed on the bottom screen. The main objective is to defeat all enemy commanders or capture their home base in each mission. Key mechanics include capturing resource points to generate income for buying new units or upgrading existing ones, and using the unique abilities of your hero characters to turn the tide. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, as you carefully maneuver units to secure chokepoints and manage your limited funds. It feels like a careful, sometimes punishing puzzle where a single misstep can lead to a complete rout of your forces.
