Game Overview
Ys V: Expert on the SNES is one of those games that slipped under the radar for a lot of people, which is a shame because it’s a solid little action-RPG. You’re still playing as Adol, slashing your way through monsters, but this time you can actually jump—which sounds basic, but after the earlier Ys games, it feels like a revelation. The combat’s faster, magic actually matters now, and the dungeons have this nice mix of puzzles and hidden paths that make exploring them way more satisfying.
The pixel art’s got that warm, detailed SNES look, and the soundtrack? Absolute bangers, as usual for Ys. Yeah, it’s in Japanese, but if you’ve played any action-RPG before, you’ll figure it out. It’s not as punishing as some of the earlier entries, but there’s still enough challenge to keep things interesting. If you dig classic action-RPGs with a bit of that 16-bit magic, this one’s worth digging up.
