I picked up 2 In 1 - Sonic Advance & Sonic Battle back in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, a time when Sega and THQ were putting out some of the most replayable cartridges for the system. It was a solid two-pack that bundled two distinct Sonic experiences, offering a nice change of pace depending on whether you wanted to blaze through levels or duke it out with custom fighters.

In Sonic Advance, you control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy as you race through side-scrolling stages, collecting rings and defeating robots. The main goal is to reach the end of each act as quickly as possible, pulling off spin dashes and homing attacks to maintain momentum. Sonic Battle shifts focus to arena combat where you build a fighter from the ground up, assigning skills and special moves earned through story mode. Matches are fast and tactical, demanding quick reflexes and smart use of your character’s unique abilities. Both games hold up well, with Sonic Advance favoring pure speed and Sonic Battle rewarding careful planning. It feels satisfying to switch between tearing through zones and outsmarting opponents in versus mode.
