Game Overview

I picked up 2 Pak Special Red for the Atari 2600 a while back. It came out in 1990, which was pretty late for the system, and it was one of those budget double feature cartridges. You get two games in one: Motocross and Boom Bang. It feels like a product of that era when companies were squeezing the last bits of life out of the console with simple, no frills releases.

In Motocross, you control a rider on a dirt bike, navigating a side scrolling course filled with hills and obstacles. The main goal is to reach the finish without crashing; you adjust your speed and use the joystick to keep the bike level during jumps. The physics are unforgiving, and one bad landing sends you tumbling. Boom Bang is a fixed screen game where you move a small cannon at the bottom, shooting upward to destroy blocks and enemies. You have to clear each screen to advance, but the blocks often regenerate if you're not fast enough. Both games are challenging in their own ways, with Motocross demanding precision and Boom Bang testing your speed and aim. Playing them feels like a straightforward, sometimes stubborn, trip back to the basics of early gaming.
