Game Overview

Sonic 1 – The Special Stages (demo) was a standalone release for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) in 1990, developed and published by Sega. It offered a focused preview of the bonus stages from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, isolating the surreal, rotating maze gameplay that many players encountered only after collecting fifty rings and reaching a checkpoint. At a time when platformers often rewarded exploration with simpler bonus screens, this demo presented something far more disorienting and visually distinct.

You control Sonic as he automatically runs forward through a constantly rotating, checkerboard tunnel filled with rings and bombs. The goal is to collect a certain number of rings before reaching the end of the stage, all while avoiding the bombs that will instantly eject you if touched. The primary mechanics involve using the D-pad to shift Sonic left or right across the tunnel's surface and timing jumps to navigate gaps or avoid obstacles. The perspective shifts violently with the tunnel's spin, making spatial judgment a constant challenge, and the pacing is relentless. It feels like trying to solve a puzzle while riding a tilt-a-whirl.
