Sonic the Hedgehog 1, released by Sega for the Genesis in 1991, included special stages that felt like a hidden part of the game. These stages were accessed by finding giant rings tucked away in the regular levels, offering a break from the side scrolling action. They stood out on the Genesis for their use of pseudo 3D effects, something not many games attempted at the time.
You control Sonic as he runs through a rotating maze, viewed from behind. The goal is to collect a set number of rings before reaching the end, while avoiding obstacles that will cost you rings if touched. The maze constantly rotates, changing your perspective and making navigation tricky. The speed increases as you progress, adding to the challenge. It feels disorienting but rewarding when you finally grab that Chaos Emerald.
