Blocky SNES football where players look like pixel toys—but those tackles crunch, the muddy fields slow you down, and the announcer somehow gets way too into it. Good luck figuring out the play buttons before your QB gets flattened.

Game Overview

ABC Monday Night Football for the SNES came out in 1993, published by Data East. It was part of that wave of early 90s football games where the graphics were still pretty simple, but the competition to capture the feel of the sport was heating up. You got a solid, no frills football experience without a lot of the flash that would come later in the console generation.

You control the entire team, calling plays from a menu and then executing them on the field. The main goal is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball downfield, either through running plays or passing. A couple of its notable mechanics are the ability to dive for extra yards as a ball carrier and a defensive system where you can switch between players to make a tackle. The pacing is deliberate, a bit slower than some arcade-style football games, and the difficulty can spike, especially when the computer decides to mount a comeback. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes frustrating, but generally satisfying simulation of a TV broadcast game.
