Joe Montana Football was Sega's first real shot at taking on Madden back in the Genesis days. It runs on the same engine, so the gameplay feels familiar—just with a different coat of paint and, of course, Joe Montana’s name slapped on it. The graphics are blocky by today’s standards, but back then, seeing those little pixelated players scramble downfield felt pretty legit.
It’s got that classic early ‘90s football vibe—simple playbooks, no frills, just pick a team and go. No deep franchise modes or anything, but if you just want to throw some quick passes and relive the era of Sega vs. EA’s turf war, it’s a fun little time capsule. The commentary’s hilariously sparse, too—just a few canned lines that somehow make it more charming.
