Game Overview

Joe Montana Football was Sega's early shot at taking on Madden, back when football games were still figuring things out. It runs on the same engine as EA's big hitter, but it's got its own rough-around-the-edges charm—like the way players move in these weird, jerky sprints and tackles look more like awkward hugs at first. The playbook isn't deep, but calling audibles with Montana feels oddly satisfying once you get the hang of it.

Funny enough, this was the game that kicked off the whole Sega vs. EA football rivalry. You can see the bones of what both sides would later polish into something smoother, but here? It's all pixelated helmets and plays that either work way too well or fail spectacularly. If you're into retro sports games, this one's a weird little time capsule.
