I remember playing Joe Montana Football on MS-DOS back in 1991, when Electronic Arts was putting out a lot of sports titles for the platform. It was one of those early football games that tried to capture the feel of the sport without the graphical power we take for granted now. You had to work with what the hardware could do, and that meant a lot of imagination filling in the gaps between the pixels and the play calls.

You control the quarterback, Joe Montana himself, and your main goal is to move the ball downfield by passing or handing off to runners. The game uses a play selection screen where you pick from a list of offensive formations before each snap. Once the play starts, you have to avoid defenders, aim your pass with the keyboard, and hope your receiver makes the catch. The pacing is quick, almost frantic, especially when the defense closes in, and the difficulty can spike depending on the opponent. It feels like a stripped down, tense chess match where every decision matters in the moment.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
