ActRaiser came out for the Super Nintendo in 1990, developed by Quintet and published by Enix. It was one of those early SNES titles that felt different from the usual platformers or RPGs of the time, blending two distinct styles of play into one cohesive experience.

You control a divine entity, The Master, who descends to earth in the form of a warrior to clear monsters from the land. After each action stage, you oversee the growth of human settlements from a top down perspective, using miracles to clear obstacles and protect your people from sporadic monster attacks. The game alternates between side scrolling combat with a sword and limited magic, and a slower paced simulation phase where you direct civilization's expansion. It's not overly difficult, but it demands attention to both your reflexes and your strategic planning. Playing it gives a real sense of purpose, rebuilding the world piece by piece between intense battles.
