I first played Altered Beast on the Amiga back in 1988, a port handled by a few different companies like Ocean Software. It was a time when arcade-style brawlers were making their way to home computers, and this one stood out with its mythological theme. You don't see many games where you literally transform into monsters to fight your way through ancient Greece.

You control a resurrected warrior, moving screen by screen to punch and kick through waves of zombies and demons. The main goal is straightforward: rescue the goddess Athena from the underworld. The signature mechanic is collecting spirit balls dropped by certain enemies; grabbing three transforms you into a powerful beast like a werewolf or dragon, each with a unique attack. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially during the multi-stage boss fights. It feels raw and chaotic, a straightforward brawl that demands quick reflexes and smart positioning.
