Game Overview

Altered Beast came out for the Sega Genesis in 1988, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the early titles for the system, a side-scrolling beat 'em up that felt familiar to arcade players but brought a distinct visual style and a strange, mythological setting to the home console.

You control a centurion resurrected by Zeus, moving screen by screen through haunted, monster-filled stages. Your main goal is to defeat the boss at the end of each level to rescue a goddess. The core mechanics involve punching and kicking your way through skeletons and zombies while collecting blue spirit balls dropped by certain enemies; gathering three of these transforms you into a powerful beast like a werewolf, dragon, or bear, each with its own devastating attacks. The pacing is deliberate, even a bit slow at first, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially with limited continues. It feels like a constant push for survival, a cycle of building power and desperately trying to keep it before the next wave hits.
