Ancients 1 Deathwatch came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Farr-Ware. It was a time when dungeon crawlers were often unforgiving, and this game fit right into that tradition without much fanfare. You loaded it up from a floppy disk, and it immediately set a mood with its sparse graphics and ambient sound.
You control a lone adventurer exploring a multi-level dungeon, screen by screen, with the goal of recovering ancient artifacts. Combat is straightforward; you swing your sword or fire arrows at monsters that lurk in the corridors. The real challenge comes from navigating traps, solving environmental puzzles, and managing your limited resources. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can feel punishing if you rush. It feels tense and methodical, like every decision could be your last.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
