Game Overview

Legacy of the Ancients came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Quest Software. It was a time when RPGs were still figuring out their conventions, and this one stood out for its unusual premise and structure, blending traditional fantasy with a kind of cosmic scavenger hunt that felt different from the usual fare.

You play a shepherd who accidentally inherits a cursed scroll from a dead traveler, pulling you into a quest to collect ancient coins scattered across the world. The main goal is to gather these coins to unlock display cases inside a mysterious, otherworldly museum. You explore towns from a top-down perspective, talking to NPCs and picking up quests, then delve into first-person, grid-based dungeons for combat and loot. There's no endless grinding on weak monsters; you gain experience by completing specific tasks and solving puzzles. The pacing is deliberate, and some puzzles can be quite obscure, demanding careful attention to dialogue and environment. It feels like piecing together a strange, expansive mystery where every new coin brings a small revelation.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
