Game Overview

Legacy of the Wizard came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Nihon Falcom. It was part of that wave of exploratory action games that really pushed players to map things out on graph paper, back when secrets felt genuinely hidden and progress was measured in stubborn trial and error. It didn't have the immediate name recognition of some other titles, but it carved out its own quiet space with a particular kind of depth.

You control five members of a family, each with unique abilities; the father breaks certain walls, the daughter can jump higher, the son has a weapon with longer reach, the mother casts spells, and even the family pet can crawl through tiny passages. Your goal is to guide each of them through a sprawling, interconnected dungeon to find four crowns and ultimately defeat the dragon Drasle. The gameplay is methodical, built around swapping characters on the fly to bypass obstacles that only one of them can handle. It's notoriously difficult, with minimal guidance and enemies that respawn the moment you leave a screen. Playing it feels like slowly assembling a complex key, one stubborn piece at a time.
