Game Overview
BattleTanx on Game Boy Color takes the chaotic tank battles of the N64 original and shrinks them down into a surprisingly fun top-down shooter. Instead of 3D mayhem, you're navigating grids of ruined cities, blasting rival tanks while hunting for power-ups—homing missiles feel unfair (in a good way), and finding a nuke is basically an "I win" button for that level.
The story’s wild—some virus wiped out most women, society collapsed, and now you’re driving a tank across America to rescue your girlfriend from warlords. It’s ridiculous in that late-90s way where everything’s dialed to 11. Each city has three missions, mixing up objectives like wiping out all enemies or grabbing key items, and the password saves mean you’ll be scribbling down codes like it’s 1999.
What surprised me was how different the tanks feel—the lighter one zips around but dies fast, while the heavy brute trades speed for firepower. Health pickups drop from wrecked enemies, so fights get tense when you’re low and scrambling for scraps. Battle mode lets you jump into levels without the story, which is great for quick sessions. The chiptune remixes of BattleTanx 2’s soundtrack are a nice touch too.
It’s janky in places (good luck with some of the tighter maps), but there’s something satisfying about clearing a screen of enemies with a well-placed nuke.
