BattleZone was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection released by Activision in 1998, a reissue that brought a piece of arcade history to home computers. It arrived at a time when 3D graphics were still a novelty, and its vector-based world stood out among the pixel art and early polygonal games of the era.
You control a tank from a first-person perspective, navigating across a stark, geometric landscape to seek out and destroy enemy vehicles and installations. Your primary objective is to survive wave after wave of attacks while completing specific mission goals, such as defending bases or eliminating all hostiles in a sector. Signature mechanics include using a periscope view to scan the horizon for distant threats, managing limited ammunition and fuel, and identifying enemy units by their distinct wireframe shapes. The pacing is deliberate and tense, demanding careful movement and sharp aim rather than reckless speed. It feels like a high-stakes game of hide and seek played with lethal machinery.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
