Ocean Software released Beach Volleyball for the Game Boy in 1990, a time when portable games were simple and often focused on quick, repeatable action. It was one of the few sports titles that tried to capture a two player experience on the system, relying on a link cable for head to head matches.

You control a single player on a two person team, moving left and right to position yourself under the ball. The main goal is to win each set by outscoring the opponent, either against the computer or a friend. Key mechanics include timing your button press to set the ball for your partner or spike it over the net; the floaty, somewhat unpredictable ball physics add a layer of challenge to every return. Matches are fast and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding good reflexes and anticipation. It feels surprisingly tense for such a basic looking game, especially when a long volley hangs in the balance.
