Tiny sprites dive for the ball in slow-mo—time your spikes just right or eat sand. Trash-talking a friend in 2-player mode is the real win here.

Game Overview

World Beach Volleyball 1991 is one of those Game Boy sports games that somehow nails the vibe despite the hardware limits. You’ve got two-on-two matches with blocky little sprites diving for the ball, and the controls are simple enough—tap a button to serve, another to spike—but timing matters way more than you’d think. The sand court is just a yellow rectangle, but your brain fills in the rest.

I kept losing my first few matches because I’d jump too early for spikes, but once it clicks, the back-and-forth gets weirdly intense. There’s no fancy power meter or special moves, just pure volleyball stripped down to its basics. The two-player mode’s where it really shines, though—nothing like trash-talking a friend while their pixelated athlete faceplants into the sand.

It’s not deep, but for a 5-minute burst of nostalgia, it’s weirdly satisfying. Just don’t expect HD graphics.
