Game Overview

Malibu Beach Volleyball came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Activision. It was one of those early portable sports games that tried to capture a summer feeling on a tiny green screen. You could pick from a few different teams, each with their own slightly different stats, and just jump into a match. It wasn't trying to be a simulation; it was a simple, quick distraction, the kind of thing you'd play for a few minutes between bus stops.

You control a pair of players on a small court, switching between them to handle serves, bumps, and spikes. The main objective is just to win the set by outscoring the computer or a friend with the link cable. The mechanics are basic: you position your player under the ball and press a button to hit it, trying to aim your shots. The AI can be surprisingly cheap, reading your inputs and sending impossible returns, which makes some matches feel less like volleyball and more like frantic punishment. Despite the jank, there's a genuine, clumsy fun in finally setting up a perfect spike and watching it (usually) land.
