Game Overview

Big Mountain 2000 came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by Imagineer. It was one of those late 90s snow sports games that tried to capture the feel of shredding fresh powder without getting too serious about realism. You could tell it was aiming for fun over simulation, which set it apart from some of the more technical racers on the system.

You control a skier or snowboarder, racing down slopes while avoiding obstacles like trees and other competitors. The main goal is to finish each course as fast as possible, but you also collect coins and perform tricks for higher scores. Signature mechanics include choosing your equipment before each run, pulling off mid-air spins and grabs, and watching your character tumble comically after a crash. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike on later courses, especially when narrow paths demand quick reflexes. It feels chaotic and lighthearted, like a day on the slopes where every wipeout is part of the fun.
