Play Mountain King Online
Explore dark caverns, collect gems, and navigate hazards to find the Mountain King's crown in this Atari 2600 adventure from 1983.
Mountain King came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, published by CBS Electronics. It was one of those games that tried to do something a little different on the system, mixing exploration with a bit of action and puzzle solving. You don't see many games from that time that ask you to navigate a large, multi-screen cavern system, and it stood out for that ambition.
You control a small explorer who must find and carry the Mountain King's crown to the summit of the mountain. The game plays across a series of connected screens, and you spend a lot of time just mapping the place out in your head. You have a limited flashlight to see in the dark areas, and you need to collect gems to keep it powered. Bats and skulls roam the tunnels; you can stun the bats with a high-pitched whistle, but the skulls require a different approach, sometimes needing a gem as a bribe to pass. It's a tense, methodical game where one wrong turn can leave you disoriented and vulnerable. The constant pressure of a dying light and unpredictable enemies makes every screen transition feel like a genuine risk.
