Fire rays into an 8x8 grid, deduce hidden atom locations, and solve puzzles using logic while minimizing your probes in this classic 1987 MS-DOS brain teaser.
Black Box came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a time when puzzle games often relied on pure logic and a clean interface. It was developed by John McIntosh and published through a shareware model, which felt common for clever, self-contained experiences on the platform. The game doesn't try to wow you with graphics or story; it just presents a quiet, cerebral challenge that fits right into that era of computing.
You don't control a character, but instead fire rays into an 8x8 grid to deduce the location of hidden atoms. The main objective is to find all the atoms using the fewest probes possible, watching how each ray deflects, reflects, or gets absorbed. Key mechanics include analyzing ricochet angles and absorption points, turning each shot into a spatial reasoning test. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, with difficulty that escalates sharply as the atoms are placed in more complex arrangements. It feels like quietly untangling a knot in your mind, one logical step at a time.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
