Game Overview

Black Box was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release that bundled several titles from the platform's early years. It was developed by John R. James and published by Mindcraft Software, offering a type of puzzle experience that felt distinct from the action and adventure games common at the time. It didn't rely on graphics or speed, but on pure, abstract logic.

You don't control a character; instead, you fire rays of light, beams, into the sides of an 8x8 grid, observing how they reflect, refract, or get absorbed by invisible atoms hidden within. The objective is to deduce the exact location of all atoms by interpreting the paths of these beams. Key mechanics include predicting beam behavior based on the rules of reflection and absorption, and using the "probe" command to check specific squares at a scoring cost. The puzzles start gently but quickly demand careful deduction and pattern recognition, with later stages becoming genuinely challenging. It feels like quietly untangling a knot in your mind, one logical thread at a time.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
