Game Overview

I picked up BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable on the PlayStation Portable back in 2010, a time when fighting games on handhelds were still a bit of a novelty. Arc System Works handled the port, and they managed to squeeze a lot of that console intensity onto the smaller screen. It felt like having a proper arcade fighter in your pocket, which was pretty special for the PSP era.

You control one of several distinct fighters, each with unique abilities and elaborate move sets, aiming to defeat opponents in one-on-one combat. The main objective is to deplete the opponent's health bar within a time limit, either through story progression or versus matches. Signature mechanics include the Drive button, which activates character-specific abilities, and Barrier blocking, which lets you guard at the cost of your barrier gauge. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be steep, especially when trying to execute longer combos on the portable hardware. It feels responsive and deep, rewarding practice with satisfyingly flashy victories.
