Game Overview

California Games was basically the '90s version of the X-Games before that even existed. You pick your sponsor (if the version you're playing has them) and jump into a bunch of laid-back but surprisingly competitive events—skateboarding, BMX, surfing, and even footbag (which is way harder than it looks). The surfing part feels like a mini rhythm game where you’re judged on tricks, while the skateboarding has this weirdly satisfying half-pipe physics where you can totally eat pavement if you mistime a flip.

Some versions cut a few events—the Genesis one ditches frisbee for some reason, while older Atari ports lose roller skating too. It’s all very arcade-y, but there’s a weird charm to how janky some of the controls feel now. You’ll either love it or throw your controller after the tenth failed footbag attempt.
