Captain America and the Avengers came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Data East. It was one of those side-scrolling beat 'em ups that felt right at home on the system, joining a crowd of similar games where you just walk to the right and hit things. The roster includes Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Vision, each with their own basic attacks and a screen-clearing super move that costs health.

You pick one of the four heroes and move through levels screen by screen, fighting waves of enemies like the Masters of Evil and AIM agents. The main goal is to stop Red Skull's plans, which involves rescuing kidnapped civilians and defeating bosses. You use character-specific projectiles, such as Captain America's shield or Hawkeye's arrows, and you can call in assists from other Avengers not currently in play. The game moves at a decent clip, but some enemy patterns and cheap hits can make it frustrating without a second player. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes messy brawler that's more fun with a friend.
