Captain America and the Avengers came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Data East. You control either Captain America or Hawkeye, working through side-scrolling stages to rescue the captured Avengers from Red Skull's forces. You fight through waves of enemies, screen by screen, occasionally battling larger bosses like the Mandarin or Ultron. The game can be brutally difficult, with cheap enemy placements and limited continues, but swapping between heroes in two-player co-op helps ease the burden. It feels like a straightforward brawler that captures the team's spirit, even if the execution is sometimes frustrating.
