Cars 2 for the Nintendo DS came out in 2011, published by Disney Interactive Studios. It was one of those licensed games that showed up during the DS's later years, when the handheld was still getting plenty of family friendly titles. The game follows the plot of the movie, putting you right into the world of international espionage and high speed racing.

You control either Lightning McQueen or Mater across a series of missions and races set in global locations. The main objective shifts between straightforward circuit races and mission based driving, like evading enemies or collecting items under a time limit. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen to activate special weapons or gadgets during pursuit sequences, and performing drift boosts around tight corners by tapping the shoulder buttons. The pacing is fairly quick, though some missions can get repetitive if you struggle with the slightly loose handling. It feels like a straightforward arcade racer that doesn't take itself too seriously, and the short mission structure works well for handheld play.
