Castle of Illusion on the Sega Master System is a surprisingly solid 8-bit take on Mickey’s classic platformer. You’re still rescuing Minnie from Mizrabel, bouncing on enemies (or chucking whatever’s lying around at them), and hopping through weirdly delightful worlds like a candy-coated nightmare and a toy box gone rogue.
What I love is how much they squeezed out of the Master System. You’ll carry rocks to climb higher, toss blue balls in the toy level (weirdly satisfying), and hunt for keys to unlock doors. Treasure chests are everywhere, and half the fun is smashing them open to see if you get an extra life or just coins. The boss fights are simple but memorable—especially the giant spider in the forest. It’s not as smooth as the 16-bit version, but for an 8-bit Disney game, it holds up way better than it should.
