Play Centurion - Defender of Rome Online
Lead a Roman commander, manage resources, conquer provinces, and engage in real-time battles while racing chariots and battling gladiators in Centurion - Defender of Rome.
Centurion: Defender of Rome came out in 1990 for MS-DOS, developed by Bits of Magic and published by Electronic Arts. It was one of those games that tried to do a lot at once, blending strategy and action at a time when many titles stuck to one genre. You get a mix of turn-based empire management and real-time battles, which felt ambitious for its era.
You play as a Roman commander tasked with expanding the empire by conquering provinces across Europe and North Africa. On the strategic map, you move armies, manage resources, and negotiate with other factions. When armies clash, you jump into real-time combat, directing units like infantry and cavalry with simple mouse clicks. Between major campaigns, you can also participate in chariot races or gladiator bouts for money and morale. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, especially when dealing with naval movement or rebel uprisings. Even with its rough edges, leading a legion into battle gives a real sense of scale and momentum.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
