Game Overview

Daikaijuu Monogatari came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of mid-90s RPGs that tried to blend traditional mechanics with something a little different, in this case, giant monster battles. You don't see many games from that era that mix turn-based exploration with kaiju fights.

You control a young hero tasked with stopping a demon king and the giant monsters ravaging the world. The gameplay splits between overhead exploration in towns and dungeons, and first-person, turn-based combat against regular enemies. The signature mechanics are the kaiju battles, which play out like a strategic mini-game where you command a giant creature, and the need to frequently upgrade your gear in towns to survive the increasingly difficult dungeons. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, as you grind for better equipment between story beats. It feels like a classic, slightly quirky RPG that demands patience but offers a unique kind of satisfaction when you finally take down a towering monster.
