Blizzard Entertainment released The Death and Return of Superman for the Super Nintendo in 1994, a time when licensed games were a mixed bag. It arrived in the thick of the comics event it was based on, and on the SNES it felt like a standard side-scrolling brawler trying to do something bigger.
You control Superman through most of the game, punching and flying through screen after screen of Intergang thugs and alien monsters. The main goal is to stop Doomsday's rampage, which leads to playing as four replacement heroes like Superboy and Steel, each with slightly different moves. Signature mechanics include a screen-clearing super move that drains health and some light platforming sections between fights. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can spike hard, especially during boss encounters. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky effort to translate a massive story into a simple beat-em-up.
