Game Overview

Decisive Battles of the American Civil War, Vol. 2 came out in 1992 from Strategic Simulations, Inc. for MS-DOS. It was part of a wave of serious strategy games from that era, the kind that ran on beige boxes and asked you to think more than click. This one focused on the Western Theater, a change of pace for war gamers used to Gettysburg or Antietam.

You command either Union or Confederate forces, moving brigades and artillery across hex-based maps. The main goal is to outmaneuver your opponent, seizing key terrain and breaking their morale. Two mechanics stand out: managing supply lines, which can strangle an advance if neglected, and the detailed combat results that show exactly why a unit broke. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is high; a careless move can lose a battle in a few turns. It feels like conducting a fragile, bloody orchestra where every instrument might fall silent at any moment.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
