Game Overview

Derby Stallion '96 is one of those weirdly engrossing SNES games that makes you care way too much about pixelated horses. At first glance, it looks like a simple racing game, but within minutes you're obsessing over bloodlines, training schedules, and whether your rookie stallion has the stamina for the long races. The menus are all in Japanese, but after some trial and error (and maybe a fan translation guide), you start picking up on the surprisingly deep mechanics.

What hooked me was breeding—you can pair up champions to create faster foals, and there's something weirdly satisfying about seeing your homebred horse finally overtake the competition on the final stretch. The races themselves are tense little sprints where positioning matters more than you'd think. It's definitely niche, but if you ever spent hours micromanaging stats in other '90s sims, this might accidentally eat your weekend.

Also, the victory fanfare when your horse wins is an absolute banger.
