Game Overview

Descent on MS-DOS was one of those games that either clicked with you immediately or left you dizzy and disoriented—no in-between. At first, the full 3D movement (up, down, sideways, upside-down) felt like piloting a spaceship after too much coffee. The keyboard controls weren’t the problem—it was wrapping your brain around a maze where "floor" and "ceiling" meant nothing. I definitely got lost in those mines more than once.

But once it clicked? Man, flying through tunnels blasting robots while upside-down became weirdly natural. The wireframe map helped, though even that was a headache in the demo—thankfully the full version cleaned it up. Some players got so good they’d play entire levels inverted just for fun. And if you had two joysticks lying around, the controls smoothed out nicely.

It never hit Doom-level fame, probably because mastering movement—especially "tri-chording" (pressing multiple thrust directions to go faster)—was like learning to ride a bike in zero gravity. But that’s also why it still has die-hard fans decades later. Descent doesn’t hold your hand, and that’s the point.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
