Play Dezaemon Online
Build your own NES shooter or play the included E.D.I.T. demo. Design ships, levels, music – surprisingly deep for an 8-bit game maker.
Dezaemon came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Bullet Proof Software. It was a strange and ambitious release for the console, arriving at a time when most players were used to just playing games, not building them from scratch. It felt like a glimpse into a different, more technical side of gaming that most of us never got to see.
You don't control a character so much as you control the entire creation process. The main objective is to build your own side-scrolling or vertical shoot 'em up, or to play the pre-made demo game included on the cartridge. The signature mechanics involve designing your own enemy ships, programming their attack patterns, and composing music using a surprisingly flexible tracker interface. The pacing is entirely up to you; it's a slow, thoughtful process of trial and error, not a test of reflexes. It feels like solving a complex and deeply satisfying puzzle with no single right answer.
