Donkey Kong - Jungle Climber is one of those DS games that makes you wonder why more platformers don’t use its climbing hook mechanic. You swing and latch onto pegs, pulling yourself up vines and cliffs while dodging bees, rolling boulders, and whatever else the jungle throws at you. The controls feel surprisingly smooth once you get the hang of them—though my first few attempts ended with DK face-planting into spikes.
Bananas are everywhere (obviously), but grabbing them mid-swing adds this weirdly satisfying risk-reward tension. Some levels flip gravity or turn into minecart rides, and the later puzzles actually make you think about peg placement instead of just mashing buttons. It’s got that classic Donkey Kong charm, just with more wall-jumping and less barrel tossing.
If you’ve ever wanted a platformer where the level itself is the obstacle, this one’s worth digging out of the DS library.
