Play Dragon Ball Z - Gokuu Hishouden (Japan) Online

Tiny Goku sprites battle Frieza’s goons in this stripped-down RPG—grind for XP, nail pixelated Kamehamehas, and watch Krillin eat dirt (again). The Game Boy chiptune theme somehow makes it all work.

Game Overview

Ever tried playing Dragon Ball Z on a Game Boy while pretending your bus seat was the Lookout? Gokuu Hishouden was my go-to for that back in the day. It’s this weird little Japan-only RPG where you take turns smacking Frieza’s minions around, but somehow the tiny sprites still nail Goku’s hair physics. The fights are simple—pick an attack, watch the animation, repeat—but there’s something satisfying about landing a pixelated Special Beam Cannon after grinding for XP.

Don’t expect Budokai-level flashiness, though. It’s more like someone took the anime’s big moments and squeezed them into a Tamagotchi. You’ll recruit allies mid-battle (Krillin dies a lot, obviously), and the training sequences feel like a weird mix of menu navigation and wishful thinking. But when that 8-bit theme kicks in during a fight? Still hype. Perfect for killing time when you’re supposed to be doing homework.
