Dungeon Quest, released as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, was developed by Softdisk and published in the early 1990s. It fits right into that era of straightforward, tile-based dungeon crawlers that relied more on procedural generation than cinematic storytelling. You won't find elaborate cutscenes here; it's all about the grid and what might be hiding in the next square.
You control a lone adventurer navigating a maze one screen at a time, with the goal of finding treasure while avoiding traps and monsters. The game uses a unique tile-placement mechanic: each step reveals an adjacent tile, which could be a safe path, a deadly pit, a monster, or the treasure itself. Combat is simple, often resolved automatically or with basic attacks, but the real challenge comes from the unpredictable layout and the constant risk of instant death. Progress feels tense and deliberate, as every new tile could either save you or end your run abruptly. It's a game that makes you weigh each step carefully, and that cautious, methodical tension defines the entire experience.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
