Game Overview

Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Bandai. It was one of those late-era NES games that felt a little different, a bit more ambitious in its weird sci-fi concept than a lot of the platformers crowding the shelves at the time.

You control a cyborg dinosaur pilot named Dr. Proteus, who explores seven distinct planets. The main goal is to destroy the central computer core on each world to stop a rogue AI. You move screen by screen, punching through smaller enemy robots and dinosaurs with your extendable rocket fists. A key mechanic is switching between controlling your pilot on foot for tight interior areas and piloting your full-sized Dyno-Robo for the larger, open exterior landscapes. The game can be punishingly difficult, with precise jumps and aggressive enemies, but the sheer novelty of stomping around as a giant robot dinosaur gives it a unique charm. It feels like a clunky but earnest attempt to merge a run-and-gun action game with light exploration.
