Ecco the Dolphin came out on the Sega Master System in 1993, developed by Novotrade and published by Sega. It was one of those games that felt different from everything else on the system, trading the usual platforming and shooting for something quieter and more mysterious, set entirely underwater.

You control Ecco, a young bottlenose dolphin, swimming through interconnected zones to find your pod after a strange storm scatters them. The main goal involves exploring screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles, and using Ecco's sonar to communicate with other sea life. You navigate narrow caves, avoid predators like sharks and orcas, and build up speed to leap out of the water or ram into certain obstacles. The pacing is slow and deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially in later sections with tight passages and limited air. It feels lonely and tense, but also peaceful when you're just gliding through open water with the current pushing you along.
