Game Overview

Ecco the Dolphin is one of those games that looks deceptively chill—you're just a dolphin swimming around, doing flips, singing to fish—until suddenly you're lost in some underwater maze with no air and a shark on your tail. The Sega Master System version is simpler than the later ones, but still nails that weird mix of serene exploration and "how was I supposed to know that would kill me?" frustration.

It’s got this eerie vibe, too. One minute you’re breezing through coral reefs, the next you’re in some alien tunnel with a soundtrack that sounds like it’s from a forgotten sci-fi movie. The controls take a second to click (dolphin physics are… unique), but once they do, pulling off tight turns between spikes feels weirdly satisfying. Just don’t expect hand-holding—this game absolutely lets you drown.

If you’ve got patience for trial-and-error underwater platforming, it’s a cult classic for a reason.
